Private universities in Türkiye (officially called foundation universities) welcome thousands of international students every year, largely because admission is simpler than at state universities. This guide explains step by step how admission works, which documents you need and what the language requirements are.
How does admission differ between state and private universities?
State universities mainly use the TR-YÖS exam run by Türkiye's Measuring, Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM). Its second session in 2026 takes place on 11 October 2026, and results are valid for two years.
Private universities usually admit international students based on their high school grades, or with international qualifications such as SAT, IB or the German Abitur — no YÖS exam needed. The minimum grade varies by university and by program, and is usually higher for medicine, dentistry and pharmacy.
Documents required to apply
- A valid passport (photo page).
- Your high school diploma, or a letter confirming you are in your final year.
- Your transcript of grades.
- A recent passport-style photo.
- An English or Turkish language certificate, if you have one (not required to apply at most universities).
At the application stage, copies are usually enough. For final registration you will need the originals with a Turkish translation and legalisation (apostille or Turkish consulate certification).
Diploma equivalence (Denklik)
To complete final registration you need an equivalence certificate for your high school diploma from the Turkish Ministry of National Education. You can apply through the ministry's online e-Denklik platform, or through Turkish education attachés and consulates in your country.
Some universities let you register first and submit the equivalence within a set period, but failing to submit it can lead to cancellation of your registration, so start early.
Language requirements and the preparatory year
English-taught programs
Universities ask for proof of English to exempt you from the preparatory year. For example, İstinye University accepts IELTS Academic 6.0, TOEFL iBT 75 or PTE Academic 55. Required scores differ slightly between universities.
Without a certificate, you can sit the university's own proficiency exam; if you don't pass it, you study a one-year language preparatory program before starting your major.
Turkish-taught programs
Most universities require Turkish at B2 level for bachelor's programs and a higher level (usually C1) for graduate study, either through a TÖMER certificate from an approved centre or a Turkish preparatory year at the university.
After you are accepted: visa, registration and residence
- Acceptance letter: usually issued within days to a few weeks once your file is complete.
- Student visa: apply at the Turkish consulate with your acceptance letter; it is usually short (about one month) depending on your nationality.
- Final registration: on arrival you hand in the originals and receive your student certificate (Öğrenci Belgesi).
- Student residence permit: apply while your visa is still valid. We explain the steps in detail in Student Residence Permit in Türkiye.
Tips before you choose a university
- Make sure the university is recognised in your home country by checking your ministry of higher education's list.
- Compare the language of instruction: studying in English saves you learning Turkish first, but Turkish helps in daily life and internships.
- Don't rely on the university's name alone; compare the program itself, its length and internship opportunities.
