Northern Cyprus has become a popular destination for international students: most programs are taught in English, admission is usually based on high school grades, and the study environment is calm and close to Türkiye. This guide gives you the full picture, including the most important point: degree recognition.

Where are the universities?

Universities are spread across relatively small cities:

Students usually travel through Ercan Airport; most flights there connect via airports in Türkiye.

Language of instruction

Most programs at universities in Northern Cyprus are taught in English, some in Turkish. As in Türkiye, if you have no language certificate the university runs a proficiency exam, and students who don't pass study a preparatory year.

Admission requirements

Admission is usually based on your high school diploma, transcript and passport, with higher grade requirements for programs such as medicine, dentistry and pharmacy. Acceptance letters are usually issued quickly once your file is complete, and the university guides students through the student residence process on the island.

Degree recognition: the most important thing to check

Read this carefully before you decide:

  • In Türkiye, the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) directly recognises the degrees of students placed through Türkiye's central exam system (ÖSYM), under an agreement between the two countries. Other graduates go through an equivalence procedure.
  • For international students, the key reference is the ministry of higher education in your own country: each country keeps its own list of recognised universities, and recognition can differ by university and by program — especially for medical programs.

So we recommend that you check your country's recognition list for the specific university and program before paying any fees. At EduVista we help you with this check before you apply.

Student life

  • Small, quiet cities — good for focusing on your studies.
  • A large international student community from many countries.
  • On-campus dormitories at most universities, plus private housing near campus.

Northern Cyprus or Türkiye?

If your priority is studying in English in a calm environment, Northern Cyprus is a good fit. If you prefer a big city like Istanbul with a wider choice of universities, programs and internships, Türkiye may suit you better. Compare them on our Study in Cyprus and Study in Türkiye pages.
