When you arrive in Türkiye on a student visa, you need a student residence permit (Öğrenci İkamet İzni) that allows you to stay for the length of your studies. It is handled by the Turkish Presidency of Migration Management: you start online and complete the process with a visit to the migration office in your province.

When should you apply?

The student visa is usually short (about one month), and you must register at your university and apply for the residence permit while the visa is still valid. Don't wait until the last days — start as soon as you receive your student certificate.

Step by step

  1. Get your student certificate (Öğrenci Belgesi) from student affairs after final registration.
  2. Fill in the application online on the official site e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr and choose “student residence permit”.
  3. Pay the residence card fee and keep the receipt.
  4. Go to the Provincial Directorate of Migration Management (İl Göç İdaresi) to submit your file and give fingerprints.
  5. Wait for your card; processing can take up to 90 days, and you can track it on the same website.

Some private universities handle part of the process for their students or arrange group appointments, so check with your university's international office first.

Required documents

  • The residence permit application form (printed after applying online).
  • Your original passport and a copy.
  • Your student certificate from the university.
  • Two biometric photos.
  • Valid health insurance: either general health insurance (GSS) or private insurance covering the permit period.
  • Proof of address: a rental contract, a dormitory certificate, or a sponsor's undertaking certified by a notary.
  • The receipt for the residence card fee.
  • For applicants under 18: parent/guardian documents and consent depending on the visa type (holders of a student visa are usually exempt).

Bring originals and copies of every document — officers may ask for both.

Renewing your permit

The student residence permit is usually issued for one academic year and must be renewed every year. Start renewing well before it expires; universities warn students with less than 60 days left on their permit to apply immediately to avoid a violation.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying late, after the visa has expired.
  • An undocumented address, or a rental contract in someone else's name without an official undertaking.
  • Health insurance that does not cover the whole permit period.
  • Assuming distance learning qualifies — the student residence permit is tied to on-campus study.
